1901–02 Stoke F.C. season
The 1901–02 season was Stoke's 14th season of league football.
Overview
On the eve of the new season ace striker Willie Maxwell joined Third Lanark for £250 after scoring 85 goals in 173 games for the 'Potters'. He was sorely missed and although Mart Watkins weighed in with 15 goals, Stoke's League form in 1901–02 was again disappointing.
With Freddie Johnson now captain of the team Stoke again took 16th position in the table this time avoiding relegation by just a single point thanks mainly to a four-match unbeaten run right at the end of the League fixtures.
The relegation battle came to a crescendo in April with 14 of the 18 teams in the First Division in danger of being relegated to the Second Division. Even 3rd place Newcastle only escaped relegation by seven points.
Stoke with one of the poorest goal-averages in the Division were favourites to go down, however they managed to escape the releation places for a second season running. Stoke could have got relegation on the final day of the season if Small Heath had beaten Notts County but the match finished 0–0 and both Small Heath and Manchester City went down.
Stoke fared better in this season FA Cup making it to the quarter-finals before losing to Nottingham Forest. One of the positives of the season was the emergence of goal-keeper Leigh Richmond Roose
